This is the time of year when we all are getting tired at work – the dark mornings and nights don’t help – and on top of that Christmas is coming and that can sometimes seem like the last straw. We may get a sore throat and then worry that we might not feel well enough to prepare for Christmas – or something like that. Its all more pressure. Its nice to have a few homeopathic remedies to hand which can just help nip things in the bud – like for example ACONITE which can help stop a sore throat developing into something worse PARTICULARLY if it started SUDDENLYafter exposure to a COLD WIND – like that north wind today – and if you are feeling ANXIOUS. So simple yet so effective when taken appropriately. Wrap up warm this weekend!

Just been thinking how lucky I have been to get to know local people around Birdham and the Witterings who have helped me with kindness in all sorts of ways – big and small but always meaningful. We all must use our local shops, businesses, trades people, cottage industries, because they are integral to a successful community – they form its backbone. Villages die when local shops and businesses close.

Right now I want to mention Clive and Jess at access-by design based in Birdham who patiently worked with me to produce my first website. This was a very daunting prospect for me because I am not computer literate and needed all the help I could get just to make decisions about design etc… I did not need to worry. They gently led me through the process to completion, and even now if I forget anything – which is often – they are there to talk it through with me. And now I’ve got a BLOG thanks to them! How cool is that!

Such a nice feeling that they are just down the road ! Local talent – and we need to foster it!

I’ve been thinking a lot about fear and anxiety recently because there seems to be so much of it around.

People are frightened about swine flu because there has been so much media coverage. They are anxious about their work, debts, and bills – especially with winter upon us and Christmas very close.

Fear is a powerful negative emotion which over time, can – if we allow it to – distort our judgement, deplete our energy, and compromise our immune systems.

And some people live in fear all the time.

We all need a certain level of anxiety to survive each day:

We [hopefully] wait to cross a busy road – because we are anxious to AVOID being knocked down by a car.

We take care pouring boiling water from a kettle to a teapot because we want to AVOID being scalded.

However, people who live in a permanent state of fear AVOID doing things that cause them further anxiety so their world shrinks, their activities are limited, they lose confidence, and the quality of their lives deteriorates.

Bach Flower Remedies can help such people manage their fears. Their situations may remain the same, but they begin. to see a way through

In fact the role of a Bach Flower Practitioner is not simply to help correct emotional imbalance in an individual but to teach that patient how to treat themselves.

In this way each patient learns which remedies work for them – when to take them and how.

It is anticipated that most patients will only need to see a practitioner for a few sessions.

Carrying on really from last time the theme remains around the immune system and ways in which we can all help ourselves stay well.

Now is the time when the clocks have gone back, the nights are drawing in, and daylight hours are shorter, to really focus on boosting your immune system. The simplest way to do this on a daily basis is to get out when the morning winter sun is shining before 10am for at least half an hour. The sun activates the production of Vitamin D in the skin and has a beneficial effect on our mood and immune system.

HOWEVER The sun in winter is a lot weaker than in the summer and also less evident obviously , so insufficient most probably, to make enough Vitamin D in our skin.

Oily fish provide lots of Vitamin D, but not all of us eat heaps of that – especially vegetarians and vegans.

So – although I am not a great one for supplements – a bit of extra Vitamin D could boost our immune systems this winter.

In fact, new research funded by the Welcome Trust has shown that Vitamin D supplements enhance a person’s immunity to bacteria.

These last few weeks I have been spending some time thinking about general health matters. We are fast approaching winter and lots of animals either go into hibernation or a “ slowed down” state of being. Whatever it is called it is REST, and it is very beneficial.

We human beings need REST on every level to allow our bodies and minds to recuperate and HEAL.

We need to learn to listen to our bodies, and monitor our emotional states so that we REST instead of depleting our physical and emotional energy and compromising our immune system.

Dr Edward Bach understood perfectly the link between body, mind and the immune system.

Nearly 100 years ago he was advocating the benefits of relaxation, meditation, and “time out.

His remedies -used appropriately- help support us during times of stress; encourage us to rest before exhaustion burns us out; helps stop negative feelings develop into more serious and debilitating emotional states; and generally help maintain balance and harmony in our lives.

So helpful – particularly in the winter.

My first blog.
